2026년 1월부터 부다페스트 VIII구에 “브뤼르 알프레드 하우스, 헝가리 유대인 유산 공원(Brüll Alfréd House, Hungarian Jewish Heritage Park)”이라는 새 정부 지원 홀로코스트 박물관이 문을 열 예정이다. 이는 2025년 9월 18일 야노스 보카 EU(János Bóka EU) 담당 장관이 가진 기자회견에서 발표되었다. 이 기관의 운영은 MTA라는 기관이 맡게 된다.

장관은 이러한 사업이 성공하려면 사회 전체의 지원이 중요하다고 강조했다. 실제로 이러한 지원이 매우 중요함이 드러났다. ATV와의 인터뷰에서 헝가리 유대인 공동체 총 랍비 슬로모 쾨베스(Slomó Köves)는 “홀로코스트는 오늘날까지 헝가리 사회에 치유되지 않은 상처로 남아 있다”고 말했다. 동시에 MTA의 자체 기자회견에서 제33대 회장 타마스 도이치(Tamás Deutsch)는 “21세기형 문화·교육 기관, 공동체 공간, 대규모 공원이 모든 면에서 조성될 것”이라고 밝혔으며, “이는 미래를 향한 헝가리, 유대인 정체성의 상징으로 만들어졌다”고 강조했다.

또한 이 공원은 2013년 유명 역사학자 사볼츠 시타(Szabolcs Szita)가 시작했으나 2019년 유대인 공동체, 정부, 일부 NGO 간의 갈등으로 완전히 실패한 기존의 ‘Destiny House’ 사업을 대체한다. 슬로모 쾨베스(Slomó Köves)는 “야노스 보카(János Bóka)의 임명이 기념관이 마침내 적절한 방식으로 실현될 수 있다는 새로운 희망을 준다”고 말했다.

헝가리 정부는 항상 유대인 공동체에 적극적으로 관여해 왔으며, 그 접근 방식에서 유럽에 모범을 보여왔다. 2025년 4월 3일 총리 빅토르 오르반(Viktor Orbán은 인스타그램에 “헝가리는 유럽에서 유대와 기독교 문명의 단호한 수호자이자 기수”라고 게시했다. 이러한 결의는 새 공원이 조성되는 것으로 확실히 확인된다.

우리는 모두 새 공원을 통해 홀로코스트를 결코 잊지 않고 기본적인 인간 가치를 상기할 수 있게 되기를 기대할 수 있다.

New government funded Holocaust museum in Hungary

Beginning January 2026, a brand new government-funded Holocaust museum called “Brüll Alfréd House – Hungarian Jewish Heritage Park” is going to open its doors in the VIII district of Budapest. This has been announced by the minister for EU affairs  Mr. János Bóka on its press conference held on the 18th of September 2025. The management of this institute would be taken over by an organism called MTA. 

The minister also insisted on the importance of support besides the whole society for such initiatives to be successful. As it turned out, such support was really vital. In an interview to ATV, the chief rabbi of the United Hungarian Jewish Community Slomó Köves stated that “The Holocaust remains an unhealed wound in Hungarian society to this day.” At the same time, at the MTA’s own press conference, its 33. president, Tamàs Deutsch affirmed that “a 21st-century cultural and educational institution, community space, and huge public park will be created in every aspect.” and that “it was created as a symbol of Hungarian-Jewish identity looking toward the future.”

It is also important to note that this park is replacing the former “Destiny House” initiative launched in 2013 by the famous historian Szabolcs Szita but totally failed in 2019 due to several conflicts between the Jewish community, the government and some other NGO’s. As Slonó Köves now said “The appointment of János Bóka gives new hope that the memorial center will finally be realized in a fitting manner.”.

The Hungarian government was always highly engaged towards jewish communities and even showed an example to Europe in its approach. On the 3rd of April 2025, the prime minister Viktor Orbàn posted on Instagram that “Hungary is the determined guardian and standard-bearer of Judeo-Christian civilization in Europe.”. This determination is fully confirmed by the new park being set up. 

We can all look forward to see the new park in order to never forget the holocaust and be aware of the basic human values.
