An Underground Remnant of the Japanese Occupation

In the heart of Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, lies an underground tunnel known as the Japanese Tunnel (Lubang Jepang). Constructed during Japan’s occupation of Indonesia between 1942 and 1945, the tunnel served as a military stronghold in Southeast Asia.

Built largely through forced labor, the tunnel functioned as a logistics hub, an ammunition storage site, meeting rooms, and even an escape route. Stretching over one kilometer with winding corridors and hidden chambers, the site remains intact and accessible to visitors today.

From Painful Memory to Historical Attraction

For local communities, the Japanese Tunnel is a stark reminder of wartime suffering. Thousands of Indonesian forced laborers, or romusha, were subjected to harsh conditions, starvation, and even death during its construction.

Today, however, the tunnel has been transformed into a historical tourism site. Visitors descend from the Panorama Park entrance into cool, dimly lit corridors, guided by local storytellers who share both the tragedy and significance of the site.
