이 축제들과 몰타의 여름을 상징하는 요소 중 특히 눈에 띄는 것은 불꽃놀이이다. 불꽃은 저녁뿐만 아니라 아침이나 낮에도 들을 수 있다. 많은 사람들 특히 몰타인들은 밖으로 나와 가족, 친구, 이웃과 함께 이 시간을 즐긴다. 축제는 보통 해당 성인의 이름을 딴 마을의 주요 교회 주변에서 열린다.

가장 큰 축제 중 하나는 8월 15일 성모 승천 축일(Saint Mary 또는 몰타어로 Santa Marija)이다. 사람들은 고조(Gozo) 섬의 중심 도시 빅토리아(Victoria)에 있는 시타델라(Citadella)에 모인다. 그곳에 위치한 성당은 성모 승천을 기념해 지어졌으며 ‘성모 승천 대성당(Cathedral of the Assumption)’이라는 이름을 가진다(Visit Malta, n.d.). 

행사는 산타 마리야의 조각상을 라밧(또는 빅토리아)의 거리를 따라 운반한 뒤 다시 성당 안으로 모시는 것으로 시작된다(Gozo Cathedral, n.d.). 이 의식에 앞서 조각상은 8월 첫 번째 일요일에 성당 밖으로 옮겨져 “왕실의 파란색과 금으로 자수된 덮개 아래, 북쪽 두 번째 통로의 아치 아래에 놓인다”(Gozo Cathedral, n.d.).

카니발도 몰타 전역에서 널리 축하된다. 그 역사는 1400년대로 거슬러 올라가며, 1530년경 성 요한 기사단( Knights of St John ) 시대에 큰 인기를 얻었다(Festivals in Malta, n.d.). 카니발은 사순절(Lent)이라는 40일간의 금식 기간이 시작되기 전 즐기는 축제다. 발레타(Valletta), 빅토리아(Victoria), 나두르(Nadur) 등 여러 지역에서 퍼레이드가 열린다. 젊은이들은 분장을 하고 클럽에서 파티를 즐기기도 한다.

카니발 외에도 3월의 성 패트릭의 날(St Patrick’s Day)에는 많은 사람들이 초록색 옷을 입고 이 아일랜드 축일과 관련된 장식품을 착용하며 축제를 즐긴다. 몰타의 전통 축일은 아니지만 최근 몇 년 사이 매우 인기를 얻었다. 주요 축제 장소는 세인트 줄리안스(St. Julian’s)이며, 이곳에는 페이스빌(Paceville)이라는 클럽 거리와 많은 바가 있다.

마지막으로 소개하고 싶은 것은 종교적이지 않은 작은 축제인 딸기 축제(Festa Frawli)다. 올해는 4월 27일 일요일에 열렸다. 이 축제에서는 농부들이 재배한 신선한 딸기를 구매할 수 있으며, 딸기 케이크, 타르트, 팬케이크, 스무디, 밀크셰이크, 심지어 딸기 샐러드( Eeeatwell 제공)까지 맛볼 수 있다(Taste Atlas, n.d.; Festa Frawli, n.d.). 이 축제는 맛있는 딸기로 유명한 므자르(Mgarr)라는 마을에서 열린다.

The main religion in Malta is Catholicism. Maltese people are an example that religion does not have to be serious and confined only to the church. Summer in Malta is a season of celebrating different Catholic saints. The tradition of feasts, or ‘festi’ in Maltese, dates back to the 1700s (Visit Malta 2025). Each town celebrates its own saint (who is the patron of the locality) on a different week, with the biggest celebrations happening on the weekend (Visit Malta, 2025). These feastas involve parades during which the statue of the saint is carried around the town (Visit Malta, 2025), accompanied by local orchestras. Confetti is also often thrown during parades. Locals often wear special t-shirts designed for these feasts.

What is especially characteristic of these celebrations, and of summer in Malta in general, are the firework shows. Fireworks can be heard not only in the evenings but often also in the mornings and during the day when there’s still light outside. Many people, especially Maltese, go outside and enjoy spending this time together with their family, friends and neighbours. The celebrations often take place next to the main church of the town, which is under the patronage of the commemorated Saint.

One of the bigger ones happens on the 15th of August to celebrate Saint Mary (or Santa Marija in Maltese). People gather at the Citadella in Victoria, the main city of the Gozo island. The Cathedral located there is dedicated to Her and bears the name Cathedral of the Assumption (Visit Malta, n.d.). The event starts with the statue of Santa Marija being carried through the streets of Rabat (or Victoria) and then brought inside the church again (Gozo Cathedral, n.d.). Before this ceremony, the statue is brought out of the church on the first Sunday of August “and placed under the arch of the second north aisle beneath a royal blue, gold-embroidered canopy.” (Gozo Cathedral, n.d.)

Carnival is also widely celebrated across the Maltese Islands. Its history dates back to the 1400s and grew in popularity during the times of Knights of St John around 1530s (Festicals in Malta, n.d.). Carnival is a time of celebrations before the Christian Lent starts, a forty day period preceding Easter during which the believers are expected to fast. Parades are organised in Valletta, Victoria, and Nadur among, other localities. Young people also dress up and party at clubs.

Apart from the Carnival, in March, on St Patrick’s Day, many people also go out to party and dress in green and wear accessories related to this Irish holiday. While it is not a Maltese holiday, it has become very popular in recent years. The main place of celebration is the city of St. Julian’s, where Paceville (the club district) and many bars are located.

Lastly, I would like to talk about a small, non-religious holiday: The Strawberry Festival, or Festa Frawli in Maltese. This year, the event took place on Sunday, 27th April. You can buy fresh strawberries from the farmers and try strawberry cakes, tarts, pancakes, smoothies, milkshakes, or even a salad with strawberries, offered by Eeeatwell (Taste Atlas, n.d.; Festa Frawli, n.d.). This festival is held in Mgarr, a town known for delicious strawberries.
