[ESG코리아뉴스=Kaylyn Kim] 1월 31일 오후 9시경, 아메리칸 이글 5432편이 로널드 레이건 국립공항에 도착하는 도중 UH-60 블랙 호크 헬리콥터와 충돌했다. 비행기에는 승객 60명과 승무원 4명이 탑승했고, 헬리콥터에는 군인 3명이 탑승했는데, 불행히도 모두 사망했다. 현재 신원이 확인된 희생자가 55명인 만큼, 이 비극의 영웅들을 기억하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 

각자는 개인적인 사연과 계속할 수 없는 삶을 살았다. 여러분이 이 사건이 삶에 있어 예상치 못한 본질을 어떻게 보여주는지 이해하고, 이 사건에 연루된 모든 구성원에게 깊은 애도를 표하며, 우리가 삶을 계속해 나가는 동안 감사하는 마음을 품기를 바랜다.

다음은 우리와 마찬가지로 열정, 꿈, 미래에 대한 희망을 가졌지만 그 꿈을 현실로 이루지 못했던 세 명의 강력한 여성에게 바치는 헌사이다.

아스라 후세인 라자(Asra Hussain Raza)는 인도 이민자 부모의 집에서 태어나고 자란 26세의 아내이자 딸이었다. 그녀는 2020년에 인디애나 대학교를 병원 경영학 석사 학위로 졸업하고 2023년 8월에 남편과 결혼했다. 그 이후로 아스라는 항상 다른 사람들의 필요를 돌보기 위해 노력했다. 사실, 그녀는 DC 비행기 추락 사고가 발생했을 때 병원에서 출장을 마치고 돌아오는 중이었는데, 이러한 그녀의 행적은 그녀가 끝까지 다른 사람들을 도우며 살아왔다는 것을 보여준다.

하지만 이 사고로 그녀의 남편과 가족에게 비극적인 소식을 전하는 것은 안타까운 일이다. 사고 당일, 공항에서 그녀를 기다리고 있던 그녀의 남편 하마드 라자는 응급 의료 서비스(EMS) 차량이 줄을 서 있는 것을 보고 즉시 무언가 잘못되었다는 것을 깨달다. 하마드는 종종 뉴스에서 이런 사건을 들었지만, 자신에게는 그런 일이 일어날 줄은 전혀 예상하지 못했다. 아내가 그에게 보낸 마지막 메시지는 "20분 후에 착륙합니다"였다.

 하마드는 결혼한 지 2년이 지난 지금 아내의 장례식을 치르는 아픔에 직면해야 했다. 하지만 그는 세상에 "인생은 짧습니다. 사랑하는 사람을 꼭 껴안아 주세요. 비행기에 탑승할 때 사랑한다고 말해주세요"라는 메시지를 전했다. 

워싱턴 비행기 추락 사고의 또 다른 영웅인 키아 더긴스(Kiah Duggins)는 지역 사회의 많은 사람들이 그리워하는 딸이자  학생 이었으며, 예비 교수였다.

키아는 캔자스주 위치타에서 수술을 받는 어머니를 지원하기 위해 워싱턴 D.C.에 있는 집으로 돌아오는 중이었다. 하지만 다가올 가을 학기에 하워드 대학교 법학 교수가 되는 것을 포함한 그녀의 미래는 하룻밤 사이에 엄청나게 바뀌었다.

고향인 캔자스주 위치타 이스트 고등학교를 졸업한 후,키아는 위치타 주립 대학교에 입학하여 정부 지원 기관인 풀브라이트(Fullbright)로부터 보조금을 받은 후 대만어 영어를 가르쳤다. 그녀는 전 세계적으로 교육을 공유하는 교환 프로그램인 풀브라이트의 2017년 옹호 청원 캠페인(Advocacy Petition Campaign)에 참여했다. 또한 미모와 지성을 겸비한 키아는 2014년과 2015년에 미스 버틀러 컨트리(Miss Butler Country)로 선정되었다.

몇 년 후, 그녀는 2021년에 하버드 로스쿨을 졸업하고 임상 및 무료 법률 자문 우수 학생상(Clinical and Pro Bono Outstanding Student Award)를 수상했다. 키아는 하버드 법률 지원국(Harvard Legal Aid Bureau)의 회장이 되든 2021 크라바스 인터내셔널 펠로우상(Cravath International Fellow Award)를 수상하든 항상 주변 지역 사회에 긍정적인 영향을 미치려고 노력했다. 

졸업 후 그녀는 노이펠트, 셰크 & 브루스틴(Neufeld, Scheck & Brustin) 로펌에서 일했고, 시민권단(Civil Rights Corps)에서 변호사로 지치지 않고 일하면서 경찰의 부정 행위에 맞서 싸우고 텍사스와 워싱턴 D.C. 전역의 교도소 시스템 개혁을 위해 목소리를 높였다.

그러나 키아는 경력의 여러 단계를 거치면서도 자신을 이끈 길을 결코 잊지 않았다. 그녀는 하버드 로스쿨에서 워크숍을 진행하고 환경 보호청(EPA)이 위치타의 지하수 오염 문제를 해결하도록 독려했다.

키아가 지역 사회에서 수행한 중요한 역할을 고려하면 많은 사람들이 그녀의 죽음에 슬픔과 비탄을 표했다. 키아의 위치타(Wichita) 교회 목사는 그녀가 교회에서 모든 사람의 하루를 밝게 했고 온 마음을 다해 하나님을 사랑했다고 강조했다. 키아의 아버지 모리스 더긴스(Maurice Duggins)는 "우리는 아름답고 훌륭한 첫째를 잃은 슬픔을 받아들이고 있다"고 말했다. 심지어 하버드 로스쿨의 급우들도 "그녀는 우리 중 최고였다"고 말했다.

마지막으로, 변호사이자 딸이자 파트너인 엘리자베스 앤 키스(Elizabeth Anne Keys)는 이 사건에서 알려지지 않은 또 다른 영웅이었다. 엘리자베스는 1992년 1월 29일에 태어났다. 그러나 33년 후 같은 날, 그녀는 이 비극적인 사건으로 세상을 떠났다. 키스의 파트너인 데이비드 사이드먼은 그녀가 D.C.에 도착하면 부부가 그녀의 생일을 축하할 것이라고 말했다.

엘리자베스는 축하할 수 없었지만, 지구에서 지내는 동안 주변 지역 사회에 크게 기여했다. 오하이오주 신시내티에서 태어난 그녀는 2010년 마데리아 고등학교를 졸업하고 학교의 수석 졸업생이 되었다. 엘리자베스는 터프츠 대학교에서 경제학과 지역 사회 보건을 전공했고, 또한 대학 요트 팀, 마라톤 팀, 터프츠 콘서트의 활동적인 멤버이기도 했다.

졸업 후, 키스는 워싱턴 DC에 있는 윌킨슨 스켈로프 로펌에서 변호사로 일했다. 그녀는 직장에서 무료 변호 사건으로 유명했고, 심지어 D.C. 항소 법원의 무료 변호 명예의 전당에 올랐다. 사실, 그녀는 이 사고가 발생했을 때 출장에서 돌아오고 있었고, 이 사고로 인해 동료인 사라 리 베스트가 사망했다.

독자로서 우리는 엘리자베스 키스를 개인적으로 알지 못했을지 모르지만, 그녀의 어머니는 "리즈는 많은 사람에게 소중한 친구였으며, 모두에게 최선을 다했다"고 표현했고, 그녀의 친구들과 가까운 관계자들은 모두 그녀의 "두려움 없는 태도, 유머, 날카로운 재치"를 그리워 했다.

뉴스의 독자로서 우리는 이러한 피해자들이 우리의 사랑하는 사람, 중요한 다른 사람 또는 친척일 수도 있다는 것을 인정해야 한다. 이러한 피해자들이 우리와 마찬가지로 "인간적"이었다는 것을 인정하는 것은 우리가 죽은 후에 인정받기를 바라는 것처럼 이러한 불행한 사고의 피해자들을 인정해야 할 필요성을 더욱 느끼게 한다.

Tragic Collision at Ronald Reagan N ational Airport: Remembering the Lives Lost.

On January 31st at around 9 PM, American Eagle Flight 5432 collided with a UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter while arriving at Ronald Reagan National Airport. The plane contained 60 passengers and 4 crew members, and the helicopter contained 3 military members, all of whom unfortunately passed away. With 55 of the victims currently identified, it is important to recognize the heroes from this tragedy, who each had personal backstories and lives that they could not continue. I hope you, the reader, will understand how this event shows the unexpected nature of life, provide our deepest condolences to all of the members involved in this incident, and embrace gratitude as we go on with our lives.

Here is a tribute to three powerful women who, like us, had passions, dreams, and hopes for the future, but could not live out those dreams into reality.

Asra Hussain Raza was a 26-year-old wife and daughter born and raised in a household of Indian immigrant parents. She graduated from Indiana University in 2020 with a master's degree in hospital management and married her husband in August 2023. Since then, Asra has always made an effort to tend to others’ needs; in fact, she was returning from a work trip at a hospital when the DC plane crash occurred, showing how she was truly helping others until the very end.

However, this did not make the news of the tragedy any easier on her husband and family. On the day of the incident, her husband, Hamaad Raza, who was waiting for her in the airport, saw the lines of emergency medical service (EMS) vehicles and immediately realized something was wrong. While Hamaad often heard of events like this in the news, he expressed that he never expected it to happen to him—that his wife’s final message to him would be, "We're landing in 20".

Just after being married for two years, Hamaad now has to face the hurt of organizing a funeral for his wife. Yet, he also has a message for the world: "Life is short. Hug your loved ones. Tell them you love them when they’re getting on a flight".Another hero in the Washington plane crash, Kiah Duggins was a daughter, student, and professor missed by many in her community.

Kiah was returning to her home in Washington D.C. after being in Wichita, Kansas to support her mother who was undergoing surgery. Yet, her future, which included being a Howard University law professor in the upcoming fall semester, drastically changed overnight.

After graduating from Wichita East High School in Kansas, her hometown, Kiah entered Wichita State University, where she taught Taiwanese English after receiving a grant from a government-funded organization called Fullbright. She participated in Full Bright's 2017 Advocacy Petition Campaign, which is an exchange program for sharing education worldwide. Also, having both beauty and brains, Kiah was crowned Miss Butler Country in 2014 and 2015.

Fast-forward a few years, she graduated from Harvard Law School in 2021 with a Clinical and Pro Bono Outstanding Student Award. Kiah, whether it be by being the president of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau or receiving the 2021 Cravath International Fellow Award, always strived to make a positive impact on the community around her. Following graduation, she worked at the firm Neufeld, Scheck & Brustin and worked tirelessly as an attorney at the Civil Rights Corps, fighting against police misconduct and speaking up for reforms in the prison systems across Texas and Washington D.C.

Yet, even as Kiah transitioned to different phases of her career, she never forgot the path that led her there, leading workshops for Harvard Law School and encouraging the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to address Wichita's groundwater contamination problem.

Considering the significant role that Kiah played in her community, many expressed sorrow and grief at her passing. Kiah's minister at her church in Wichita emphasized how she brightened everyone's day at church and loved God with all her heart. Kiah's father, Maurice Duggins, expressed, "We are coming to terms with the grief associated with the loss of our beautiful and accomplished firstborn.” Even her classmates from Harvard Law School stated, "She was the best of us".

Finally, Elizabeth Anne Keys—an attorney, daughter, and partner—was another unrecognized hero from this incident.Elizabeth was born on January 29th, 1992. Yet, 33 years later on the same day, she passed away from this tragic incident. Keys' partner, David Seidman, articulated that the couple was going to celebrate her birthday once she arrived in D.C.

While Elizabeth could not celebrate, she greatly contributed to the community around her during her time on Earth. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, she graduated from Maderia High School in 2010 as her school's valedictorian. Elizabeth then studied economics and community health at Tufts University, while also being an active member of the varsity sailing team, marathon team, and Tufts Concert.

Since graduating, Keys worked as an attorney at Wilkinson Skeloff Law Firm based in Washington DC. At her workplace, she was renowned for her pro bono cases, even being on the D.C. Court of Appeals Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll. In fact, she was arriving from a work trip when this accident occurred, also leading to the death of her co-worker Sarah Lee Best.

 While we, as readers, might not have known Elizabeth Keys on a personal level, her mother expresses that "Liz was a dear friend to so many, offering her best self to them all", and her friends and close connections all attest to her "fearlessness, humor, and sharp wit".

As consumers and readers of the news, we need to acknowledge that these victims could easily have been our loved ones, significant others, or relatives. Recognizing that these victims were as “human” as us further underscores the need to recognize the victims of these unfortunate accidents, just as we would want to be recognized after our deaths.
