인도네시아 서(西)수마트라의 시원한 고지대, 해발 1,400미터가 넘는 곳에 눈을 편안하게 해주는 초록의 바다가 펼쳐져 있다. 바로 알라한 판장 차 농장이다. 솔록(Solok) 지역의 탈랑산(Mount Talang) 기슭에 위치한 이 농장은 네덜란드 식민지 시대부터 차 생산의 중심지 역할을 해왔으며, 오늘날까지도 미낭카바우(Minangkabau) 사람들에게 경제적 생명줄이자 문화적 상징으로 자리하고 있다.

이 농장은 아침 안개에 둘러싸인 끝없는 녹색 언덕의 장관을 선사한다. 20헥타르가 넘는 면적을 자랑하며 서수마트라에서 가장 인기 있는 자연 관광지 중 하나로 손꼽힌다. 관광객들은 차나무 사이를 거닐거나, 경이로운 산의 풍경을 배경으로 사진을 찍거나, 혹은 상쾌한 고지대 바람을 맞으며 따뜻한 현지 차 한 잔을 즐기기 위해 이곳을 찾는다.

그러나 알라한 판장은 단순한 사진 명소가 아니다. 이곳은 세대를 넘어 땅을 일궈온 지역 공동체의 이야기를 품고 있다. 식민지 시대부터 이곳 주민들은 새벽에 어린 찻잎을 따고 시장에 내놓을 제품으로 가공하는 등 차 재배에 의존해 살아왔다. 지금도 수천 가구가 이 농장에서 생계를 이어가고 있으며, 고통 로용(gotong royong, 상부상조의 전통)은 여전히 일상생활의 중심에 있다.

많은 농업 지역과 마찬가지로 이 농장도 새로운 도전에 직면해 있다. 기후 변화, 시장 경쟁, 유기농 및 지속가능한 제품에 대한 소비자 수요 변화는 토지와 농민 모두의 회복력을 시험한다. 하지만 이러한 압력은 동시에 새로운 기회를 의미하기도 한다. 유기농 차, 농촌 체험 관광(agrotourism), 웰니스 라이프스타일에 대한 글로벌 관심이 높아지면서 알라한 판장은 세계 무대에서 주목받을 수 있는 잠재력을 갖추고 있다.

알라한 판장 차 농장은 자연, 역사, 사람의 조화로운 공존을 보여주는 살아 있는 상징이다. 식민지 시대의 뿌리부터 현대 관광지로의 변화에 이르기까지, 이곳은 지역 유산이 변화 속에서도 어떻게 살아남고, 적응하고, 더 넓은 세계에 영감을 줄 수 있는지를 보여준다.

[Coios View ㉔] Alahan Panjang Tea Plantation: A Green Gem on the Slopes of Mount Talang

High in the cool air of West Sumatra, Indonesia. More than 1,400 meters above sea level, stretches a sea of green that soothes the eyes: the Alahan Panjang Tea Plantation. Located on the slopes of Mount Talang in Solok Regency, this plantation has been a center of tea production since the Dutch colonial era and remains today both an economic lifeline and a cultural landmark for the Minangkabau people.

The plantation offers a breathtaking panorama of endless green hills draped in morning mist. Covering more than 20 hectares, it has become one of West Sumatra’s most popular natural attractions. Tourists come to stroll between the tea bushes, capture photos against the stunning mountain backdrop, or simply sip a warm cup of local tea while enjoying the crisp highland breeze.

But Alahan Panjang is more than just a picture-perfect landscape. It tells the story of local communities who have worked the fields for generations. Since colonial times, families here have depended on tea cultivation,  from plucking tender leaves at dawn to processing them for market. Even today, thousands of households earn their livelihood from this plantation, and the tradition of gotong royong (mutual cooperation) remains central to daily life.

Like many agricultural regions, the plantation faces new challenges. Climate change, market competition, and shifting consumer demands for organic and sustainable products test the resilience of both land and farmers. Yet these pressures also bring opportunity. With the rising global interest in organic tea, agrotourism, and wellness lifestyles, Alahan Panjang is uniquely positioned to step onto the world stage.

The Alahan Panjang Tea Plantation is a living symbol of harmony between nature, history, and people. From colonial roots to modern tourism, it shows how a local heritage can survive, adapt, and inspire in a global age.
